Creating innovations for an existing product.

 

PROBLEM:

Insinkerator presented three factors that needed a solution for innovative uses and improvements for hot water dispensers. These factors were fear factor, installation factor, and new technology factor.

FEAR FACTOR:

The safety concern of accidental burns for the user and their family members.

INSTALLATION FACTOR:

The ability to quickly and easily install a hot water dispenser with as little hassle as possible.

NEW TECHNOLOGY FACTOR:

Being able to incorporate new technology and features that can help improve usability.

MARKET RESEARCH:

Researched what competitors had in the market and to see what features their products offer.

FEAR RESEARCH:

Exploration of what safety features existed in the market and how they prevent accidental burns.

INSTALLATION RESEARCH:

Analyzed any instructions we could find to see how installations differ. The biggest takeaway was some brands offered free professional installation, which eliminated all the hassle for consumers.

NEW TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH:

Exploration of what features could be integrated into the product to improve all three factors.

 

IN-HOUSE STUDIES:

After conducting preliminary research, it was essential to install and use the product ourselves. This gave use a deeper understanding of the product.


INITIAL CONCEPTS:

Sketches were created to communicate and visualize different solutions for the three factors, fear, installation, and new technology. Concepts varied from being able to use your smart phone to turn it on and let it heat up to a separate product, which completely eliminates the hassle of installation.
